Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Arjun Kapoor, Yami Gautam, Jacqueline Fernandez. Javed Jaffrey
Director: Pavan Kirpalani
Streaming on: Hotstar
Story: Chiraunji (Arjun Kapoor) and Vibhooti (Saif Ali Khan) are brothers and fake exorcists and earn a living by making use of people’s belief in ghosts and supernatural elements. One day, they are called to an estate in Dharamshala to save the people from the return of an old supernatural force. Did they successfully manage to chase the ghost away or not forms the rest of the story.
Performances: Saif Ali Khan is the star of the film and he plays a major role in making this film watchable during a lot of portions with his comic act. His ease at comedy timing and the way he was enjoying his role was amazing to see. Arjun Kapoor, Yami Gautam, Jacqueline Fernandez and Javed Jaffrey have done their bit but get completely dominated by Saif Ali Khan.
Technicalities: Most of the film takes place at night and the camerawork and lighting are neat. There are no songs in the film. Sound design and visuals effects could have been better and don’t even remotely try to surprise us or scare us much anywhere. Some of the comedy dialogues are good.
Analysis: This film is a horror comedy but like most horror-comedies these days, the horror element is just an excuse to evoke fun and there is no fear element in the film. The story is very simple and the screenplay too is outdated. Except for some fun portions here and there, there is nothing very hilarious or engaging about the treatment. The horror element in the film is very weak and offers nothing new or impactful. The tiny flashback hardly made any difference. Looks like the makers relied on the actors to deliver fun and elevate the film and Saif Ali Khan seems to have understood his responsibility clearly and comes to the rescue every time the film is about to sink. Coming up with something novel in the writing could have made this film atleast slightly different from the usual ones in the genre. The length could have been trimmed by atleast a few minutes for a slightly better experience. A weak plot and a few laughs is what this film ultimately manages to deliver.
On a whole: Bhoot Police is a strictly average horror comedy made watchable to an extent purely by Saif Ali Khan. Can be given a try if too bored.
