Story: Ibrahim (Roshan Mathew) is a very religious person and has utmost fear and respect towards God. One night, two strangers – a policeman and an accused barge into his house and leave him and his family terrified. Who are those strangers, what do they want and what happened after this forms the rest of the film.

Performances: Roshan Mathew is the central character in the film and gets major screen presence. He has done a brilliant job. Prithviraj has less screen time compared to several others but he does a terrific job in a scary role. Shine Tom Chacko, Murali Gopy, Srindaa are all good. Mamukkoya as Moosa surprises in the second half.

Technicalities: Most of the film takes place at night in a single location and camerawork and lighting have contributed immensely. Background score and sound designing too helped in building the tension and mood in the proceedings. Action sequences are raw and violent. Some dialogues were good.

Analysis: The film starts on a simple note by introducing Roshan Mathew’s character, his past, his friends and the place he lives at. Then, suddenly the tone shifts and the film turns intense and thrilling. The next one hour is riveting with a suspenseful screenplay. Then, the pace dips a bit and the film hovers at the same point for a while. But again, the climax is good and ends with a strong message on an important and sensitive issue. The writing is good while building the tension and suspense but could have been better with the characterisations of Prithviraj and Shine Tom Chacko. Some sensitive topics are addressed fearlessly and it is both a positive and negative as it could get conveyed to some in the wrong way. Despite a few hiccups here and there, this is one more Malayalam thriller that offers a unique experience with a simple storyline.

On a whole: Kuruthi is a raw and intense thriller that is definitely worth a watch if you like slow-paced realistic Malayalam thrillers.
