Director: Jeethu Joseph
Streaming on: Amazon Prime
Story: The story of Georgekutty (Mohan Lal) and his family continues from 6 years after the unforgettable incident in their lives. The police are still anxious and trying all ways to catch Georgekutty with the right evidence. Was Georgekutty successful once again or not forms the story.
Performances: Mohan Lal brilliantly gets into the shoes of the same character once again and sails through with ease. Same with Meena, Ansiba Hasan, Esther Anil and others who appeared again. Like in the prequel, once again the performances play big role in elevating the film and making it as realistic as possible.
Technicalities: Camerawork is good and background score is excellent. Editing is superb. The first one hour is a bit on the slower side like in he prequel but that is necessary for creating the right mood for the hard impact later on. Dialogues and detailing deserve a mention.
Analysis: This film is the sequel of 2013 blockbuster film Drishyam, which set new benchmarks for a thriller. The sequel features the same actors reappearing in their roles. When a sequel was announced, it raised a lot of curiosity as to how Jeethu Joseph is going to carry forward this story which had a proper ending during the first part. Jeethu Joseph arrives with a very interesting and unexpected screenplay which is sure to surprise all. Not for a second do the story and narration feel like they were forced into a sequel. All the proceedings and behavior of characters feel completely real and we wonder if there is really a 8 year gap between the two movies. Like in the first part, the pace in the first hour is a bit slow and sets up the right mood for the rest of the film. From then on, it is sheer brilliance from Jeethu Joseph in terms of screenplay with continuous twists and turns. The climax is perfect and completely satisfying. This film provides one of the most satisfying movie watching experience in recent times. Georgekutty will remain one of the most intelligent characters in Indian cinema. The film would have worked wonders for Mohan Lal at the box office too if it had released theatrically.
On a whole: Drishyam 2 is a very satisfying sequel and does a great job in trying to reach the hype and standards set by the prequel.
