Director: Balaji Tharaneetharan

Language: Tamil

Story: Meera (Megha Akash) and Saravanan (Kalidas Jayaram) are in love. Meera becomes pregnant without involving in any sexual activity and the doctors declare that she is the first woman to become pregnant without the need of a man. What followed this unexpected event forms the rest of the story.

Performances: This film was shot long back and both Kalidas Jayaram and Megha Akash were amateurs at that time so there is a slight level of amateurishness in their performances but they have done fine overall. Chandramouli, Jeeva Ravi and other supporting actors have fitted into their roles.

Technicalities: Camerawork is neat. Music is appropriate. Editing could have been better as there are a lot of portions which could have been trimmed.

Analysis: The basic storyline of the movie is very fresh and interesting and makes us keep wondering about what may happen next. The major issue with the film is it’s pace. Director Balaji Tharaneetharan’s other films also had the same slow placed narration. The entire screenplay of this film can be wrapped up in less than 90 minutes with a faster pace. But the movie has been dragged beyond limit. This ruins the overall watching experience. Though the story and proceedings keep us engaged, the pace keeps disturbing our connect with the film. The first half doesn’t feel problematic despite a slow pace but the second half is where the pace turns into an issue. Interesting concept like asexual reproduction in humans and important themes like God and religion have been beautifully touched through this tale. Despite issues, this movie can be given a shot for what it offers on a whole.

On a whole: Oru Pakka Kathai is an interesting take on God and religion but requires patience to sit through the slow portions.
