Story: Ex-Air Force officer Nedumaaran Rajangam (Suriya) wishes to start an airline company to provide air transport at least possible price for the poor to be able to travel. How did he achieve this and what were the obstacles and challenges he faced forms the story.
Performances: Suriya makes a monstrous comeback. He is terrific in every single frame. He has sported four different looks in this film and has physically strained himself a lot for it. This is undoubtedly one of his career best performances and will win him lot of awards. He will move many to tears in a few scenes. Aparna Balamurali is a superb pick by director Sudha. She is perfect beside Suriya and does her part brilliantly well. Paresh Rawal is excellent in a cruel villain role. Mohan Babu, Urvashi, Kaali Venkat, Karunas and other supporting actors have done their parts perfectly and added value to the film.
Technicalities: Niketh Bommireddy’s cinematography is simply amazing and the movie is a visual feast and will inspire lot of upcoming cameramen. GV Prakash is in superb form lately with Asuran last year and now Soorarai Pottru. All his songs and background score help the film a lot and create the right emotional impact. Art direction is good and the movie has been shot in several different locations, some of them which were never used for movie shoots before. Dialogues by Uriyadi Vijay Kumar are perfect and helps the narration in developing better connect with the audience. Editing is excellent and there is not a single unwanted frame or dull moment in the film.
Analysis: The story of this film is based on several true stories and is mainly based on certain events in the life of Deccan Air founder GR Gopinath. This is a story which had to be told since it is not a very familiar or popular one but has lots in it to inspire generations of people. With a perfect story in hand, Sudha Kongara and Shalini Ushadevi have created a brilliant screenplay which never stops being engaging and which never loses the tempo anywhere. The movie maintains good pace, emotional connect and tempo from start to end. This is a very rare feat these days and Sudha Kongara has mastered it with ease. Sudha Kongara’s direction too deserves applause for pulling off a film with hardly any dull moments and perfection in every department. There are no major negatives in the film worth mentioning. If at all something needs to be pointed out, the second half is a bit slow for a while. The emotional scenes in this film have worked extremely well and will bring tears to eyes of many. The movie would have been a good success commercially too if released in theatres as it contains universal content which all sections of audience can connect to.
On a whole: Soorarai Pottru is an inspiring film and one of the finest in recent times and undoubtedly the best OTT release so far. Go for it !
