Gatham review – Interesting but amateurish

Title: Gatham
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewed By: Sai Nikhil
Cast: Bhargava Poludasu, Rakesh Galebhe, Poojitha Kuraparthi
Director: Kiran Kondamadugula
Streaming on: Amazon Prime
Language: Telugu

Story: Rakesh Galebhe (Rishi) has just come out of unconsciousness and has lost his memory. As he sets to go home with his girlfriend Adithi (Poojitha Kuraparthi), their car breaks down and they ask a passerby Arjun (Bhargava Poludasu) for help. What shocking twists and turns occurred after this forms the rest of the story.

Performances: All the actors are fresh faces and are real-life IT professionals with love for cinema. Frankly speaking, their performances are amateurish and better actors would have created a different impact altogether.

Technicalities: Visuals are terrific. The movie is shot completely in California and the cinematographer has captured the superb locations in the best possible way. Sricharan Pakala’s background score is good. Editing is decent. Dialogues are fine. Artwork is commendable.

Analysis: The story of the film is interesting. The screenplay is fairly engaging but has similarities to Korean Netflix film Forgotten. Those who haven’t watched that film would find this movie more engaging and surprising. The main problem with the film is the amateurishness in terms of performances and execution. There are a lot of good twists in the film but they do not generate the same high which we experience while watching any other thriller film featuring known actors and technicians. Also, the performances let down some crucial scenes. The film is technically sound. The script too is decent on paper but does not get translated to best effect on screen. There are some loose ends in terms of logic which should have been taken care of. It’s an appreciable effort by the team who are inexperienced but have made this film purely out of love for cinema. The attempt is commendable but the overall output of the film is not the best that could have been generated with the script in hand.

On a whole: Gatham is an okayish thriller letdown by amateurishness and inexperience in terms of performances and execution.
