Story:  A buffalo escapes just before getting slaughtered and sets out on destructive mode. The story is all about how the villagers caught the buffalo.

Performances: The frame is always filled with dozens of artists. Among them, Antony Varghese, Sabumon Abdusamad and Chemban Vinod Jose are the popular faces and performed well. All other artists together add life to the film.

Technicalities: This film exhibits great technical finesse. Girish Gandharan’s cinematography is sheer brilliance and every frame captures the rawness and landscape perfectly. Prashant Pillai’s terrific background score perfectly suits the intense mood of the film. Deepu Joseph’s editing is neat and movie’s runtime is only around 90 minutes. Art direction, sound design and production design definitely deserve a mention for their contribution to the final output of the film.

Analysis: The story of this film is a one-liner. How did the villagers catch a mad buffalo forms the story. But there is a lot more to the film. There are several groups among the villagers and all of them want to be the ones to catch the buffalo. There is also an interesting parallel subplot in the film. Director Lijo Jose Pelissery is a master in capturing rawness and nativity with utmost perfection. It is evident in his film Anagamaly Diaries. He repeats the same but this time, he goes to an all new level. Aided by Hareesh and Jayakumar’s writing, the movie perfectly captures the rage, desperation, ego and survival instinct in humans and also tries to compare humans and animals in an abstract way. The climax of this film is a visual masterpiece and is rawness and goriness at it’s peak. The movie is not for the faint-hearted or for those seeking commercially entertaining cinema. It is for those who are ready to accept and enjoy anything that is unique and engaging.

On a whole: Jallikattu is visually appealing and a unique cinematic experience. Ensure good speakers and  brightness levels on your device to experience this movie to the fullest.
