Story: Based on a book released in 2019 by the same name, Class of ’83 is inspired by true events which show how ex-police officer and the Dean of Police Training Academy, Vijay Singh (Bobby Deol) trains and guides his weakest students to go against the rules and law to keep the system clean.

Performances: Bobby Deol does his part well and adds depth to the proceedings. Among several other supporting actors, Bhupendra Jadawat, Hitesh Bhojraj and Sameer Paranjape get meaty roles. They appear as Bobby Deol’s students who later turn into his trusted officers. They have performed well.

Technicalities: Camerawork is decent but is mostly dark in order to create the flavor of Bombay crime world. Artwork is good and 80’s Bombay is recreated in pretty much a convincing way. The background score does not add any extra value. Production values by Red Chillies Entertainment are fine. Editing is decent.

Analysis: Based on true events, the movie has a very simple storyline and does not have too much to convey. Five men who are under-performing in their police training are brought together by their Dean to use them as weapons to go all out on a no-holds barred attack on the Mumbai crime world. The initial portions of the film are weak and do not generate much curiosity. After Bobby Deol’s entry, the momentum slightly improves. Almost at halfway through the film, the movie actually starts holding our interest and from there on, the movie is fairly engaging and thanks to it’s 98 minute runtime, it ends quickly without causing much trouble. Some sequences are impressively executed and it would have been good to have more of such scenes. Lack of depth in characterizations is also another minor issue. Director Atul Sabharwal does a decent job with the film but the characters and the several other aspects in the film could have been explored a bit more in depth.

On a whole: Class of ’83 is a partially engaging cop thriller based on true events which can be given a shot to kill some time.
